The story of Richard Lippincott is an interesting part of Friends history for his religious beliefs.
But maybe just as interesting are the names of his children – he had a habit of giving his children descriptive names for what was going on in his life – and the descendents who have come from his family.
Lippincott was born in England in 1615. As an adult, he moved to Massachusetts and became a Puritan. His first son, named Remembrance, was born there. (His children John and Abigail were also born in Massachusetts, but with pretty standard names.)
He became dissatisfied with the Puritans and was excommunicated in 1651. He returned to England the next year.
Upon his return, Lippincott started to associate with George Fox and Maragaret Fell and became a Quaker. During this time he named his next child Restore.
He was jailed in Devonshire for debating about the Scriptures. After his release his children Freedom, Increase, and Jacob were born.
A few years later, Lippincott was jailed a second time for his religious convictions.
His relationship with Fell proved beneficial as she helped get him released from his second prison term.
Deciding England was not the place to be, Lippincott moved back to America – first to Rhode Island where his last son, Preserved, was born, and then New Jersey, where he died in 1683.
Richard Lippincott’s contribution to Quaker history includes a passion for his religion, ministry on two continents, and interesting names for his children.
Just as interesting, however, is the list of famous descendents from his family, including two U.S. Presidents!
Former President George W. Bush and actor Sam Waterston are descendants of Lippincott’s son Freedom.
Former President Richard Nixon (also a Quaker) and actor Kevin Bacon are descendants of his son Restore.
